Interior design, also known as interior architecture, is the
the thoughtful planning of
interior spaces, whether they are in a new building or are in an
existing structure. Interior design also includes the selection
of finishes such as paint, flooring, wall coverings, and ceilings, as
well as the coordinated selection of lighting, electrical and
mechanical devices, furnishings, equipment and signage.
In order to create a built environment that works as a whole design,
coordination of all elements visible to the eye need to be
considered. The architect is in a unique position to consider,
coordinate and/or select the countless elements of a building interior.
The cross-discipline of interior design and architecture of this
practice allows for the complete design of interiors including building
code analysis and compliance, structural design, integration and design
of other architectural elements, electrical design, and mechanical design for a complete interior design
